R.I.P. HFTB

The time has come, folks. If you've followed my blog in the past, you'll know about my issues with Blogger. Apparently, Google and its subsidiaries don't appreciate my free promotion for artists so they deleted a bunch of posts throughout my year-and-a-half stay here.

So I bought my own URL, switched over to Word Press and created a brand new site called Hold the Throne. I wanted to start anew, with a fresh template and new artwork. It'll be a similar concept as HFTB but a lot better looking and less BS.

I know it's a hassle, but I'd love if all my Blogger familia can update their blog rolls and RSS readers with the new site so we can stay in touch and continue to build. Click here to subscribe to the posts at Hold the Throne. Get at me on the e-mail or Twitter if you have any issues setting it up.
Thanks for hopping on board, I appreciate the continued support. Love y'all, Peace for now!

Video Chillin' & "Family Affair"

[Edit] Wale leaked his new song "Family Affair" on his Twitter today, Check the CBox for a link.

[Edit #2] Apparently this video is not intended for the internet, thanks to Gotty for the heads up. Have fun with the new track for the time being.

Crazy at the corporate office today, but I've been looking forward to this for a minute so I'll drop it real quick.

DC lyricist Wale and pop songstress Lady Gaga connect for his video "Chillin," directed by Chris Robinson. Be on the lookout for more leaks from Wale and 9th Wonder's upcoming Back to the Feature tape this week.

Guest Who It Is

Rarely do I dedicate an entire post to a mixtape, but this here is a genuine effort that I had to highlight.

The good homie Trackstar The DJ hit my inbox today with his new tape The Guest Chamber, a collection of Wu-Tang guest appearances on non-Wu tracks. Simple formula, serious results.

Just glancing over the track list makes me know this is special. Rather than follow the trend of dime-a-dozen mixtape DJs with "exclusives" on their digital frisbees, Trackstar holds it down for heads with heat like Gangstarr & Inspectah Deck's timeless "Above The Clouds," Outkast and Raekwon's crisp "Skew It On The Bar-B" and one of my all-time favorite collabos, Method Man & the late great Christopher Wallace's "The What."

Big thanks to the man himself for the cover and links 'cause this is one for your collection. Real recognize real, Enjoy!

Fell In Love With H.E.R.. Again

Nope, I'm not talkin' about a PYT in my life. Don't fret ladies, I'm still single :-D

I'm talking one of my original loves, "Hip-Hop in its Essence is Real" as Common eloquently put it on his '94 classic song. I hit up the Black Star reunited show at Nokia Times Square and it reminded me how much I really do love hip-hop despite all the hate and negativity permeating the art form nowadays.

Mos & Kweli possessed an on-stage vibe that conjurs hip-hop's glory days as they rocked tracks from the Black Star LP in addition to solo joints from their respective careers. I was one of 2000-something rhyming along with the duo during what's sure to be one of 2009's best concerts, period.

The good folks at OGHipHop posted the video up top, while YN flip-cam'd the later show to post on Rap Radar.

I'll leave y'all with the footage and suggestions of new music that's carrying on tradition. If you need help finding these projects, hit me up. Enjoy!

We The Lions, You The Cheetahs

I announced it before, but I wanted to remind my loyal readers about this weekend's epic concert.

This Saturday, two of my favorite MCs Talib Kweli and Mos Def will reunite as Black Star for a pair of shows at Nokia Theatre NYC. Yours truly will be in the building for the later time slot, supporting real hip-hop in its truest form.

Tokyo designer Rocksmith dropped these shirts to mark the Brooklyn duo's performance, which are available now at Karmaloop and at the shows.

Scoop up your ticket here and let me know if you want to link up at the show. Thanks to Gotty for the heads up on the T-shirts, Enjoy!

Friday Night Lights (Out)

The internets were all sorts of buzzin' today about this clip of blog-whore Charles Hamilton gettin a knuckle sandwich from his ex-girl/jumpoff/manager/whatever she may be. Sonic got a lil' too personal for shorty's liking, so she jabbed his jaw pretty heathily. I don't blame her - I'd wanna punch anyone wearing a stuffed Pink Panther on his forearm, too.

Even though I do enjoy some of his music, this goes beyond that - I don't condone airing people's personal business out like that. I think she has every right to rock his grill, dude seems like a straight asshole to shorty when he thinks he's funny, but he ain't. Plus, it makes for some of the best Twitter chatter in a minute.

Got some new music, course. Three new Eminem freestyles with Tim Westwood showin' he still has some skills, two new Wale tracks (one with a host of MCs and the other an unfinished album track) and the official "All The Above" reeeemix equipped with a revamped Just Blaze instrumental.

Throw in the full demo to Madonna & Weezy's collabo (that's growing on me, listen by listen), and tracks from T.I., Donny Goines, Nore featuring DJ Webstar, Torae & Marco Polo, & U-N-I and we've got ourselves a full Friday night.

Shouts to LowKey, Shake & Mike for the heads up on the Em frees, Necole Bitchie for the hilarious Sonic footage, and a gang of others for the random tracks, Enjoy!

I Loved College (2004 Edition)

.. So even tho I received my undergrad diploma from Rutgers University back in the winter, I'm finally walking today for the actual ceremony.

Of course, I'm rushing out the door. Well, my family is rushing me, but I had to post somethin' real quick for my loyal readers.

This here is a collection of tracks that I was into my freshman year, so these represent the start of the beast four years of my life. I tried to include a lil' something for everyone, from the club bangers I used to play while DJing to some more sentimental, nostalgic deep tracks.

Congrats to all my fellow Rutgers grads and best of luck to all my readers grinding hard to get their degrees, you can do it.

I'm off to the ceremony, Enjoy!

The Breakfast Club

It's just one of those days over here, where everything seems to be going wrong. Can't explain why, I just have a bad feeling. Gotta shake it off and just keep moving.

But, at least we've got some new music this morning. Just got an e-mail with Harlem lyricist Donny Goines' new free album The Breakfast Club. Anyone that heard Donny's first LP Minute After Midnight should be excited for this, featuring production from Dame Grease, 6th Sense, Buckshot, Statik Selektah and appearances from Termanology, Skyzoo, Planet Asia, Amanda Diva & more.

The persistent, up-and-coming MC says:

"With this album it was important to me for people to just listen. I didn't want any apprehensions or hindrances with this project at all and my main goal is to just get the music to the masses. There will always be times to make money, but my focus now is making an impact."

Donny's personal motto is "if you don't know my name, I'm not working hard enough." Now that you know his name, get to know his music.

Thanks to Melanie for the artwork and link, Enjoy!

Still Got It.. Kinda

I had to address it after my various rants.. Relapse.

To sum up my thoughts on: It's aiiight. Em seems to be even crazier sober, but definitely not as consistent as he's been. There are some gems on it, namely "Old Times Sake" with Dre, "Beautiful" and "Hello." But there's too many songs that lack replay value like "We Made You" and "My Mom" and I really can't get passed that accent, I'm sorry.

However, between the Nick Cannon and Mariah reference and insest-filled, drug-coated stories, Em does show signs of his Shady self. I think "Deja Vu" is one of his realest - resembling a 2009 "The Way I Am" - and he's at his most murderous on "Underground."

I surely didn't have high expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised overall.

Thing is, if Em keeps rapping like in this video on Tim Westwood's show, Relapse 2 could be a problem.

Thanks to RR for the "freestyle" video, Enjoy!

Covering the Classics

I've been impatiently waiting for this mixtape to drop this after reading about the concept then hearing the leaked tracks.

Brooklyn MC Joell Ortiz drops his Covering the Classics mixtape hosted by DJ Green Lantern, as he reinterprets some of hip-hops greatest records. You'll find original rhymes over classics like Naughty By Nature's "Uptown Anthem," Pete Rock & CL Smooth's "T. and Gang Starr's "Just To Get A Rep" among others.

I haven't heard the whole thing yet, just a few songs here and there, but Ortiz's sharp flow shouldn't disappoint.

A Blog For Mama

I'll keep this concise 'cause you want to spend as much time with Mom as possible today.

I know that without the love and support of my mother, I wouldn't be who I am today. Sometimes I take for granted what she's sacrificed for me and my siblings, but I really have been trying lately to let her know that I'm thankful for all she's done.

To those whose mother's have passed, I will say a prayer because I know she's somewhere smiling. Be strong.

HFTB would like to wish all the mothers out there a very Happy Mother's Day. To celebrate, here are five tracks paying tribute to all the women that have given the gift of life.

Now go tell Moms you love her, Enjoy!

Check the CBox--->

1. Boyz II Men - A Song For Mama

There were so many times
Lookin back when I was so afraid
And then you come to me and tell me
I can face anything

2. Kanye West - Hey Mama
I know I act a fool,
But I promise you I'm going back to school

I appreciate what you allowed for me
I just want you to be proud of me

3. Nas - Dance
Thinking of how amazing she was
A angel gave me love

I'm thankful, to ever know a women so real

4. Talib Kweli - Momma Can You Hear Me?

The rain is gone, now I can see you clearly
Momma, I love you dearly

Momma, I need you near me

'Cause the sun goes down every night

And your son don't go down without a fight

5. Tupac - Dear Mama

There's no way I could pay you back
But my plan

Is to show you that I understand

Give It To Me Right..

.. Or don't give it to me at all!

Okay, it's safe to say I'm obsessed with Melanie Fiona's sound - and you should be, too. Girl can SANG! Plus, she gave me a kiss on Twitter once so I'm forever in love.

I've heard the Toronto native's lead single "Give It To Me Right" all over and my iPod has been giving heavy play to the sampler to her upcoming debut The Bridge, due out this summer on SRC/Universal Motown.

Above is the official video for "Give It To Me Right" and below is taste of a new track, "Island Boy."

Thanks to Honey Soul for the heads up and the good homie Nick for the DL link, Enjoy!

10 Blogs That Vibe Missed

I'm sure by now the internets have taken time to digest Vibe Magazine's "Top 50 Rap Blogs" .. Notice the quotations and think about how seriously I value their "expert" opinion.

I'm not sure of the exact criteria used to compile this list - exclusives, intelligently-forumulated posts (Ha!), reviews, who knows - but many of their picks confused me to say the least (Kid Cudi at #26? Yea RIGHT).

I'm not saying my blog should be anywhere near the Top 50, I just do this in my spare time as a hobby and don't shoot for accolades. But, there are some well-deserving blogs that should be recognized on such a list.

So here they are, 10 Blogs that I read regularly that got the shaft by Vibe.. In no specific order:

Along with HHIR, Kev (and his team) is among the elite hip-hop blogs when it comes to the actual music. I'm talking sample sets, reviews, original content and making an effort to pay homage to rap's humble beginnings - something that some bloggers on the list often forget. How his site didn't make the list is beyond me.

If hip-hop "journalists" VladTV or artist blogs like Yeezy's can make Vibe's list, then Complex has to be there too. Though it's not ALL hip-hop (neither is 'Ye's) They have some of the most creative writers and humorous content on the 'net. Vibe receives an "F" for missing this one.

What Jay Smooth is to knowledge, Eric & Jeff are to comedy. This one should have been a given.

A collection of news, artist blogs and one of the most entertaining reads in the blogosphere in Rappers I Know.. Stop sleepin'!

Dart Adams' digial pen game is better than 99% of the bloggers out there, let alone on this mediocre list. So what he doesn't post "exclusive" MP3's or mixtapes? Does that make him any less of a rap blog? Fuck outta here.

6. IllRoots

I feel your pain, Mike. Methinks IllRoots deserves a spot over So Many Shrimp any day.

7. Analog Giant

Okay, so it's not your typical "rap blog" but can you exclude it because it posts different stuff than the 75% of New Music Cartel-copy cats out there? I think not. Plus, a blog called "Twankle & Glisten" made the cut.. At least AG could slide in at #50.

8. Jump The Turnstyle

The JTTS crew doesn't just post and bounce, they take the time to write about their opinions and the 100 Greatest Rappers of all Time countdown they have is going to be a great topic of discussion. Plus, contributing writer Sleezy Trees is F'in hilarious.

Call me a hip-hop nerd, but Werner von Wallenrod digs up some gems from hip-hop's past and makes them relevant again. Can you say the same for Prancehall? Didn't think so.

In my eyes, Ron is up there with Bol and DallasPenn when it comes to rap's best commentators. The latter two are on the list, where's the love for Ron (no fish-sticks)?

Song For The Moment: The Roots

Is anybody listening, without a pot to piss in?

If I disappear, I wonder if the world will know I'm missing..

Rutgersfestivities

+

=

Even though I graduated back in October, I still haven't walked for graduation so I can still technically consider myself a student.

Okay, maybe not but let me use that logic to party like one.

Today is the biggest celebration of the year for Rutgers alum's and students, and pretty much anyone in the state who wants to party. I went 3 of my 4 years in school, it's pretty damn cool - they set up shop in a huge field by our football stadium and I'd say around 25-30,000 people show up at any given moment IF not more.

This year we've got performances by Ryan Leslie, Motion City Soundtrack, and N.E.R.D. but that's just an excuse for an all-day, city-wide party.

Before I head out, I had to share in the celebration by posting some tunes from R Les and N.E.R.D.

For anyone in Jersey today, you'll know where to find me - roaming the streets throughout Rutgers and looking for some PYT's and good times. No Asher Roth, Enjoy!

Would You Rather Relapse or Blackout?

Today I spotted the official track lists for two upcoming LP's from some of my generation's top-notch MCs.

One, I'm extremely excited for - Method Man & Redman's sophomore collab Blackout 2. But the other, I really think is going to underperform - Eminem's return from irrelevance Relapse.

Follow my logic real quick - multiple tracks have leaked thus far from each album, so it's only right we compare head-to-head them, right? Let's check out the scoreboard:

"Crack A Bottle" vs "Ayo"

Well, "Crack A Bottle" is the catchy-yet-corny lead single that everyone expects Em puts out every album but "Ayo" is a certified banger despite a redundant chorus. It's a close call because it's the first we've heard from each party in a minute, so chalk one up for Em 'cause the song really isn't THAT bad.

"We Made You" vs. "City Lights (ft. UGK)"

This is a lackluster track from Jamal and Silas, but it does have a fire verse from Bun at the end and a thumping beat. Doesn't matter though, 'cause I can't listen to more than 30 seconds of "We Made You" without wishing I didn't have any ear drums. Score one for Red & Meth.

"3 AM" vs. "Mrs. International"

I remember being dumb excited for "3 AM" after Em's first two singles didn't wow me as much as anticipated. Man, was I disappointed. Though his lyrics are ill, he's still doing that ridiculous voice inflection we heard on Encore and the hook is kinda annoying. Meth & Red, however, deliver. A jazzy instrumental lays the groundwork for the duo's laid-back vocals, praising the likes of fine greens and even finer women.

That's another one for Red & Meth, who are crowned victorious.

You get the picture, that's my logic. Not to mention, a new Red & Meth track leaked today called "Dangerous MCs" right as Aftermath announces Eminem's next two singles drop soon - "Old Times Sake" with Dr. Dre on May 5th and "Beautiful" on the 12th.

Both albums drop May 19th, so the internets got about 2 weeks before they pop up. Get ready for a serious showdown.

Thanks to 2DB and OG Hip Hop for the covers + track lists, Enjoy!

Complete The (Sample) Set

[click the cover]

It's Monday morning, I know, I hate it too. But at least we've got some good music to get us by.

I'm starting to get the hang of e-digging for hip-hop samples, so I had to help my good homie Ivan find the missing piece to the sample set for Jadakiss' Kiss Of Death.

The particular sample is from a little known soul-rock band called Aalon, led by guitarist/singer Aalon Butler, from the band's lone album Cream City. Scott Storch flipped "Lone Princess" for "Time's Up," one of the best beats on the album in my humble opinion.

I'm very happy I could help a fellow blogger and music-lover with the difficult endeavor of finishing up a sample set, I hope all the Jadakiss fans out there have fun with this one.

If you ever need help finding a sample or individual song, get at me and I'll try my best to hunt it down.

Let's get the week started right, Enjoy!

Song For The Moment: All I Need

If you've seen what's hot in the Tweets, you'd know that I've dedicated this sun-filled Saturday to updating my iPod with my digital collection of none other than one of the G.O.A.T.'s.. Shawn Corey Carter.

Fueled by intense discussion between myself, Ivan, Dart, Legend and Niccolus this week revolving around the ranking of Jay's albums, I decided to go through each album to find the best of the best. And "All I Need," tucked neatly into the classic that is 2001's Blueprint, is one of them.

Lyrics compliments of OHHLA.. Hope everyone has a great weekend, Enjoy!

Jay-Z - All I Need

Fuck it...
I guess I got my swagger back
Mama that said I killed her man
Well I guess I got the dagger back
It's the Roc bastards we are BACK!
In the heezy
Jiggaman, B. Sieg to M-Easy (what up fam?)
Oskino and Sparks and Freeweezy (holla!)
Mickey, Mallory, Chris and Neef, hey!
All I need is the love of my crew
The whole industry can hate me I thugged my way through
And all...I...need is a chick to hold a jimmy like
Meth and Mary, like, Marvin and Tammi, unnnh...
Now understands we can't be stopped
From blowin' Swisher Sweets outta candy drops
Like we underground kings, ridin' dirty
A nigga been focused since I said hi to 30 (what up?)
Young niggas ya'll can't hurt me
Better watch and observe me
And learn how to earn better, I burn cheddar
I set fire to your empire
I blow smoke in your face, burn rubber off the rim tires
Yes I-ah...Jay I-ah...
Double G-A livewire nigga holla back

CHORUS
All I need...
Rocawear... (check)
Nike Airs... (check)
Mean bucket... (uh huh)
Armadale in the club couple o' duckets (yeah)
Couple chicks by my side, let's ride
All I need...
That new coupe (got that)
A doo-rag and a pocket full o' loot (got those)
A sunny day some chicks that wanna play
And I'll be on my way

C'mon...now...
All I need in this world o' sin
Is me and my girlfriend! (ha ha)
I got a little two-two I call 'er Peggy Sue
When I'm off in the club she fit right in my shoe (wooo!)
Gotta switch her to my waist, just in case (uh huh)
A clown wan' flip gotta reach for my bitch
Wanna act out a movie I could give you a clip (buk!)
But no adlibbin' nigga stick to the script
Now all...I...need is a high-priced lawyer
Cuz it's foul ways nowadays everybody saw you
And they comin' to court too, I thought you knew
Can't even steal on a nigga muhfuckas'll sue
In this time and age, cuz real muhfuckas'll do
When I'm surrounded by squeal muhfuckas like you
But real niggas don't fret cuz the number one crew?
R to the O to the C comin' true

CHORUS

Listen...
The cream too long, my team too strong
Bleek is too hot, Beans is gone
Ya'll niggas in the crosshair, the beams is on (see ya'll)
Ya'll whole block deserted, ya'll fiends are gone (bye bye!)
The whole Roc is jumpin', we reached our zenith
Got fiends throwin' up on themself like Willy Beaman (*giggle*)
Any given Sunday gunplay's optional
However niggas want it like Soul II Soul (however do you waaaaant it)
Whoever got hops get blocked go to the hole
Dikembe Mutumbo of this rap shit
Plus the jab is sick, and its Zab quick
Left hand'll lean 'em like a little past six
Now run along wit'cha little ass hits
Read my rap sheet nigga, THREE CLASSICS
Shut ya bumba' got A-Rod numbers
All you muddaskunks get buried in the trunk
When I blast the pump, I leave you relaxed
In the hospital lookin' at M*A*S*H for months
Then I dumps dough on the D.A. desk
And I flee scotch free and pee pee on the steps...
We've got no respect
No law or governin' why you fuckin' wit' him?
Matta'fact, why you fuckin' wit' them?
All ya'll need is the R-O-C baby
